The Internet Gave It the Wrong Name
His enquiry describes the sound carefully and then reports what he was told it was. A 4TB drive that "today began making a low pitch grinding noise that lasts approximately 1 second and repeats once every two to three seconds. The internet seems to say it is the 'click of death'. No files are accessible." His own description is accurate and the label is wrong. A one-second sustained low noise is not a click, and the difference between those two sounds is the difference between a drive that can usually be recovered and one losing surface with every rotation.

The decode: four sounds, and why this one is the urgent one
What a click actually is: short and sharp. The head assembly swings out to find its positioning reference, fails, and snaps back to its parked position. The sound is the movement — brief, percussive, and over in a fraction of a second. A drive doing this repeatedly is failing to position, which is a fault that head replacement frequently resolves with the platter surfaces intact.
What grinding is: sustained contact. A noise lasting a full second at low pitch is something rubbing rather than something moving and stopping — which on a drive means a component in contact with a platter surface while it turns. That is physically removing magnetic coating for the whole duration of the sound, and it happens again every two to three seconds.
