Although selecting the wrong format does not mean that all of your information is lost for ever; a simple “quick format” will remove an index from the disk and leave the original location of your files on it until overwritten by new data. As soon as you discontinue use of the formatted hard drive, SSD, memory card or USB stick, we can usually recover your data while still located within our facility.
Quick format: all files will remain intact until something new is written over them. Therefore, don’t reinstall your operating system; don’t add any new items to the device; take no more pictures on the formatted card; because each of these actions can write data over what remains. The less new data that is written, the more can be recovered from it. Simply place the item off to the side and contact us.
Virtually every format that we handle is a quick format which leaves the original data unchanged. This means that most of the time, with only a handful of exceptions, the original data is still available for recovery. Below are the cases we see most often:

Our recoveries of formatted media work copy first. Your original device is never actually touched live: first, a forensic image of your original device is made, then the original file system is built upon that image, finally, your files are pulled from that image.
If you tell us about the device that got formatted along with what happened, and when, we’ll figure out if the lost data can still be recovered. Following that, a written quote will typically be sent within 48 hours.
Each device is first duplicated to a forensic image; everything we do runs against this duplicate image. Therefore, none of our testing ever affects the original media.
We locate your prior file system (NTFS’s original $MFT and boot sector, FAT and exFAT’s original FAT tables and root directory), often still intact underneath the newly created blank table, and rebuild that file system so your original folder names, file names and date/time stamps will show up again.
Any files we’re unable to link back to the prior file system are carved from the raw sectors based upon their contents: each format type has a unique header and footer (FF D8 / FF D9 for JPEGs, %PDF / %%EOF for PDFs and PK for ZIPs and Office). Therefore files appear even though there aren’t any directory entries associated with those files, and the results of both steps are then combined.
All things retrieved will be verified. The signature on all items will be confirmed; documents, images, etc., will be opened and the file’s checksum will be compared to confirm that an item which has been restored, was truly restored. All carved copies of files previously discovered through the metadata will be deleted prior to the data being returned to you.
The data will be duplicated into new media in the original order, and you can begin to use it once again.

The most common questions about recovering formatted drives, cards and sticks.
Usually, if it was a quick format. A quick format writes a new, empty index (a fresh $MFT, or a new allocation table on FAT or exFAT) but leaves the actual file data intact. Where the old file system has survived, we rebuild it to restore file names and folder structures, and anything we cannot rebuild, we carve out by signature. The two exceptions are a full format that writes zeros across the drive and TRIM on an SSD, both of which really do clear the data.
Quick format simply removes the indexes but does not remove the data. Therefore, a new $MFT & boot sector for NTFS, or fresh allocation tables for FAT & exFAT are created, while the clusters themselves remain unchanged. In modern versions of Windows, full format goes further than just removing indexes and clears every sector with zeros thereby destroying the data.
Immediately stop using it. Do not reinstall your operating system. Do not copy anything onto it. And do not save any new files on it because each of these actions overwrite the data that was formatted. Contact us as soon as possible to prevent loss of data. The sooner you stop using this device, the better chance we have to recover your data.
Yes. Formatted memory cards from cameras & smart phones are some of our most common jobs, and since cameras typically use a quick format most photos & videos usually survive. Assuming no new photos/videos were taken on the card after formatting, it is usually possible to rebuild them.
No! Leave it alone. This message usually means that there is damage to either the $MFT, partition table etc. Which makes the volume un-readable. But your data is still there! If you do a format, a new index is written over the old damaged one making recovery much harder. Please send in the device as it is, and we will create a good working version by copying off the damaged one.
Sometimes, though they don’t work as well as a hard drive, memory stick/card and, to put it bluntly, we won’t brag about them. This is because of TRIM. For all internal SSDs that have TRIM enabled when the volume has been formatted, the controller will erase the freed blocks in hardware, within seconds. Often there’s no data left for us to find. If TRIM isn’t enabled on your internal disk, or if your external SSD doesn’t pass the command through, then the possibilities are better and the diagnostic will give you a direct answer.
