Cut the power — and don’t swap the board.

Keep putting power through a drive with an electrical fault and you risk burning out the motor or worsening the board damage. And don’t fit a replacement board yourself: the unique calibration data modern drives keep on a ROM chip has to be transferred first, or the drive may be beyond saving. Bringing a dead drive back.

A won’t-power-on drive is revived from its electronics outward. We bring it up safely first, then read your data off — gently, following a set order.

Free diagnostic

Drop the drive in or post it over. We pin down whether the board, the motor or the power supply is at fault, then send a written quote, normally within 48 hours.

Inspect the electronics

Under magnification the board is checked for shorts, blown diodes and burnt components — and with external drives, the enclosure is bypassed so the bare drive is tested directly.

Repair or match a board

Blown diodes and failed components are replaced, or a matched donor board is pulled from our parts store, with no weeks lost waiting on one.

Transfer the firmware

Across to the donor board goes the original ROM chip, so the drive reads its own calibration data and powers up as it should.

Image the drive

Once it powers on, the drive is cloned sector by sector onto stable storage, worked patiently around any weak areas.

Rebuild and verify

From that image your files are rebuilt, verified against a file listing, and handed back on fresh media.

Send it back

Your data comes back on an external drive by insured post, or — for up to 75GB of it — as a free download.

When it’s the board, not the platters.

When a drive draws no power whatsoever — no spin, no click, silence — it has usually lost its circuit board rather than anything mechanical: one surge, or a reversed adapter, can take out the board’s protection diode in a heartbeat. Repairing that electronics is genuine bench work, a world away from the board-swap of internet myth — a modern PCB carries drive-specific calibration in a ROM chip, so a donor board only comes alive once that chip, or its contents, is carried across. Done right, a surge-killed drive frequently reads back in full. Our case files hold a recent one: a Western Digital knocked out by a power surge, recovered by precisely this method.

The questions we field most about dead, won’t-power-on drives.

Nine times in ten it’s the electronics — a burnt motor controller, a blown protective diode or a failed circuit board — not the data. Since the platters holding your files usually come through completely intact, these drives are recoverable far more often than people expect.

No. Each retry on a drive with an electrical fault risks burning out the motor or making the board worse. Turn it off, unplug it and get in touch — less power through it means better odds.

Usually. The failed board gets repaired or a matched donor fitted, the drive’s firmware moved across, and then it’s imaged and your files rebuilt. A drive that looks utterly dead is routine work for us.

Better not to. The ROM chip on a modern drive’s board carries unique calibration data, and dropping in a donor board without carrying that chip across usually leaves the drive unreadable — a simple repair turned into a much harder one.

Frequently not. With externals the real fault is often the power adapter or the USB-to-SATA bridge, not the drive at all. Bypass the enclosure, wire the bare drive in, and more often than not it’s fine.

A won’t-power-on hard drive is £300 + VAT, flat. You get a free written diagnostic first so there are no surprises, and most jobs run no fix, no fee — with a parts-and-labour fee applying only where a board needs sourcing or the spindle has seized.
