Nobody Is Going to Be Cross About It

Her enquiry is disarming about what happened next. A drive dropped and then beeping when connected: "my friend, who had fixed his own in the past, offered to try and fix mine — you probably know where this is going. He tri"ed. She is already braced for a lecture and there is not going to be one. What matters now is not that it happened but exactly what was done, because a drive that has been opened is approached completely differently from one that has not, and only he can say.

The decode: what the beeping meant, and the three things worth asking

What the tones were, before anyone touched it: a drive has no speaker. Those sounds are the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn — most often because the heads have come to rest on a surface and adhered to it, which is a common outcome of an impact while running. That was the fault, and it required opening under filtered air with the right parts.

Why the friend's confidence was reasonable: he had done it before and it had worked. Plenty of drives are recovered by determined amateurs, and the failure mode that responds to a firm approach — a stuck head that frees — is real. The difficulty is that the same action on a different fault does permanent damage, and nothing distinguishes them from outside.

The three questions worth answering, and this is the practical part. First: was it opened? A drive opened in ordinary room air has had dust drawn across the platters at speed, and it is handled as contaminated from that point. Second: were the heads moved by hand? Manually dragging heads across a platter surface scores it, and knowing that directs where imaging should and should not go. Third: was a circuit board swapped? If so, from what, and was the original kept — because a replacement board carries another drive's calibration data, and the original board's memory chip must be transferred for it to work at all.

Why an honest account is worth more than an apology: each of those answers changes the approach materially. A drive known to have been opened is inspected differently, imaged differently, and quoted differently. Guessing at the history wastes the drive's remaining margin, and the margin is the thing that determines the result.

What tends to happen when people do not say: the bench discovers it anyway — contamination, tool marks and mismatched boards are visible — but discovers it after decisions have been made on wrong assumptions. Volunteering it costs nothing and is genuinely helpful rather than embarrassing.

What must not happen now: no further power. If the drive was opened it should be closed to keep additional dust out, and left alone.
