The decode: what the click is, and why loudness is not a measure
What a click actually is, at any volume: the head assembly swinging out to find the positioning information written on the platters, failing to locate it, and returning to its parked position. The sound is the movement. How loud that movement is depends on the drive's physical construction, its mounting, whether it is inside a machine or bare on a desk, and how much sound the chassis transmits — none of which has anything to do with what is wrong.
Why people read quietness as mildness: because failure has a soundtrack in most people's heads, and it is dramatic.
