Stop plugging a damaged stick back in.

If a USB stick has snapped, stopped being recognised, or been through water, don’t keep plugging it back in. Each attempt on a failing controller or a shorting board puts the NAND at risk, and repeated reinsertion can finish off a cracked connector. How the recovery runs.

USB recovery usually starts at the connector — repair the broken plug or torn pads, reach the memory, then read it directly. Where the board is past saving or the drive is monolithic, we go straight to the NAND.

Most USB failures come down to a snapped connector or a cracked board. We reflow the connector, restore the torn pads, and bring the drive back to a readable state.

Controller & firmware repair

Where the controller has failed or the firmware is corrupt, we bypass it and rebuild the flash translation layer that maps your files over the NAND.

Chip-off & monolith work

When the board can’t be brought back, or the stick is monolithic — controller and NAND fused into one sealed chip — we read the flash straight from the die or its test pads, then undo the ECC and scrambling to reassemble the image.

Image read-only

With access restored, a strictly read-only image is taken, reading marginal flash gently and re-reading weak pages so error correction lifts the most data.

From that image the file-system metadata is rebuilt and your files and folders extracted, recovering data even off worn cells.

The technical questions we get most about failed USB sticks.

Usually. A snapped stick means a broken connector or a cracked board, not lost data. We re-solder the connector or rebuild the torn pads, reach the memory and image it — and where the board is past saving, we read the NAND directly by chip-off.

Neither. Recovery software can’t help a stick that isn’t recognised, and superglue makes a connector repair far harder. Leave it be and send it in — for us the connector is a straightforward re-solder.
