The decode: what they probably checked, and why coffee is the worse spill
What "didn't seem to be affected" most likely means: that no liquid was visible on the drive, its connector looked clean, and there was no obvious corrosion. That is genuinely useful information and it is worth having — a drive with visible residue on its contacts is a different proposition from one that is dry.
Why it is not the same as knowing it works: a drive can look pristine and fail, because the damage that matters happens at a scale nobody inspects — a trace under a component, a joint that has begun to corrode, a contact with a film on it. Equally, a drive with visible residue frequently reads perfectly. The only test that establishes whether a drive can be read is reading it.
