She May Be an Adapter Away From All of It

Her enquiry describes the best position anybody in this archive arrives in. A laptop lost to water damage, where "they removed the drive, but wouldn't transfer the data onto an external drive for me. As far as I can tell the drive is undamaged, but I don't own the enclosure, or a functioning machine needed to read it." She is holding an apparently healthy drive and lacks only the means to connect it — and on that generation the means costs about as much as lunch.

The decode: the cheap answer, and the two things to check first

What she actually needs: an adapter. Machines of that generation use a proprietary blade format rather than a standard connector, which is why an ordinary enclosure will not fit — but adapters presenting exactly that format over USB are widely available and inexpensive. For a drive with no fault, that is the whole job, and it would be dishonest to let her believe otherwise.

Why the shop would not do it: almost certainly policy rather than capability. Many repair providers will not perform data transfer as a service — because of liability, because of time, or simply because it is not what they offer. Their refusal was not a technical judgement about the drive, and it should not be read as one.

The first thing to check, because it changes everything: whether the volume was encrypted. On that generation full-disk encryption was optional, and where it was enabled the drive reads as meaningless data without the password or recovery key. That is not a fault and no adapter helps. It is worth establishing before buying anything.

The second, and it is specific to how this drive got here: the machine was liquid damaged. Even where a drive was not immersed, residue can reach its connector — and residue on contacts is conductive, corrosive and worth looking at under decent light before power is applied. A visibly clean gold connector is a good sign; anything green, white or crusted is not, and that drive should be assessed rather than plugged in.

Why this is worth doing carefully despite being cheap: the drive is the only copy. Connecting it to a poor-quality adapter, or to a machine that offers to initialise an unfamiliar volume, introduces risk to something that currently has none. Copy everything off first, before opening or organising anything, and to two destinations if possible.

When it stops being a self-service job: if the drive does not appear on a working adapter, or appears and will not mount. At that point the assumption that it is undamaged no longer holds, and the position becomes a genuine recovery — assessed free, with a figure before anything is committed.

Why the store removing it was a favour: the drive is out, in hand, and away from a corroding board. That is a considerably better position than a drive still inside a liquid-damaged machine.
