The decode: what having no story to tell rules out

What most failures come with: a moment. It was dropped. It was unplugged during a copy. The machine crashed while it was connected. There was a power cut. Those events cause specific damage — impact damage, interrupted structures, half-written records — and knowing which one occurred narrows the case considerably.
