A Graphics Fault Stops It Displaying, Not Necessarily Running

His enquiry may describe a machine that is working perfectly. A 2011 laptop with a graphics fault: "tried to fix it using online help but no luck, so reset the firmware settings — but now I cannot locate the disk to transfer files via the cable. Please can you provide a quote to get all my files off the drive safely, and also a second quote to replace the chip if possible." He may not be failing to enter transfer mode — he may simply be unable to see that he has, and there is a way to check that costs nothing.

The decode: the free test, and the simpler answer behind it

What a graphics fault of that era does: it stops the machine producing a usable display. The processor runs, the storage works, the ports function — and the screen shows nothing, or corruption, or a black panel. Everything except seeing continues to work, which is why the fault is so disorienting to diagnose.

Why "I cannot locate the disk" may not mean what it says: entering the direct transfer mode requires holding a key at start-up, and the affected machine confirms it has worked by displaying a symbol. If the display shows nothing, there is no confirmation — so a machine that entered the mode perfectly and a machine that did nothing look identical from where he is standing.

The test that resolves it, and it takes two minutes: connect the affected machine to another computer with the appropriate cable, start it holding the key, and then look at the other machine's screen. If the disk appears there, the mode worked and the transfer can proceed — with the broken display irrelevant throughout. Almost everybody watches the wrong screen, because the wrong screen is the one attached to the machine they are worried about.

What his firmware reset changed: resetting those settings clears the stored start-up disk selection and various boot parameters. That can alter how the machine behaves at power-on and adds a variable — worth knowing about, and not a fault in itself.

Why none of this may be necessary, and this is the simpler answer: a machine of that generation carries an ordinary removable drive. It comes out with a screwdriver and reads in an inexpensive adapter on any modern computer. The graphics fault, the firmware reset and the transfer mode all become irrelevant — and this route needs no cooperation from the machine at all.

On his second question, honestly: the graphics failure on that generation is a known and well-documented one, and board-level repair is possible but rarely economic against the machine's value, with a meaningful chance of recurrence. Spending on the data rather than the device is usually the better allocation, and he is right to have asked for both figures so he can choose.
