The decode: two things happened, and one decision to get right
What the tones mean: a drive has no speaker. Those sounds are the spindle motor straining against a platter stack that will not turn, made audible as it tries. The commonest cause is heads that have come to rest on a surface and adhered to it, so the motor cannot break them free. It is mechanical, and no cable, machine or software reaches it.
Why a four-month-old drive doing this is not unusual: failure rates are highest early and late in a device's life. Manufacturing variation shows up in the first months, which is precisely why warranties exist. Nothing she did caused it, and that is worth saying because people assume a new device failing means they mishandled it.
