Nobody Backs Up the Putting-Right

Her enquiry describes a loss that happened twice and the second one cost more than the first. Photographs overwritten when a family member installed something over them: "I paid to rescue it and it was recovered in jumbled form. I bought a second external drive, spent a year sorting through and ordering photos and videos, then that co"llapsed too. The first recovery worked. What it returned was unnamed and unordered, and the year she spent repairing that was itself irreplaceable work — held, like the photographs before it, on a single drive.

The decode: why the first recovery came back jumbled, and what she then created

Why the output had no names: where a filesystem's index cannot be rebuilt, files are identified by their own internal signatures and written out — which returns the content and none of the description. Photographs come back as sequentially numbered files, organised by type and date if the metadata survived, in no folders. That is a successful recovery and a poor experience, and it is the trade-off this archive describes repeatedly. Nothing went wrong.

What the year actually produced: not a tidier copy of the same thing. She created new information — which photograph is which, what belongs with what, what each one is called, what order events happened in. That knowledge existed nowhere but in her head until she wrote it into folder names and file names, and at that point it became data. Data that had never been backed up, because nobody thinks of their own organising as a thing that could be lost.

Why that is the point worth making: the photographs were recoverable a second time in principle — they came back once and could come back again. The year of work could not. A carve returns pixels; it does not return the knowledge of whose birthday that was. So the more valuable half of what was on that second drive was the part nobody would have described as data.

What follows practically, and it applies to anybody restoring anything: the moment you start repairing a loss, the repair needs protecting from the start. Not at the end, when it is finished — from the first session. A second copy of the work in progress costs nothing and is the only thing standing between a year of effort and doing it again.

Why this failure is worse than the first: the first was an overwrite by somebody who did not understand what they were doing, which is bad luck. The second was a single drive holding the only copy of a year's work, which is a structural exposure — and it is the one this archive keeps returning to.

What is prioritised in the work now: the folder structure and filenames, explicitly, as a deliverable equal to the content. A recovery of that drive that returned the images again without her organisation would repeat the original outcome and waste the year a second time.
