Every machine it was plugged into wanted to format it — but the Kingston USB stick in question still lit up and powered on, and it held the sole copy of a batch of someone’s work files. It’s worth being clear about that format demand, because it’s both one of the most frequent ways a flash drive fails and one of the most widely misunderstood. Accepting the format is the single worst move; the prompt appearing at all, by contrast, generally means the files underneath are untouched. What it points to is a controller failure — the tiny processor that runs the stick has lost the tables it uses to interpret the flash.
Our equipment saw the stick but couldn’t read it properly, which fits a controller that has lost its mapping rather than memory that has degraded. The way flash works, the actual data lives on a NAND chip encoded in a jumbled, error-protected layout that means nothing without the controller to translate it; lose the controller and every byte remains on the chip with no ordinary way to reach it.
When the controller is gone, you stop trying to talk to it and instead read the memory beneath at the chip level. We took the NAND off the board and dumped it in full on a flash programmer, giving us the raw contents exactly as stored — jumble and all. The skilled part is turning that back into something usable: reversing the error-protection and reconstructing the particular scrambling order the controller had imposed, until the dump resolves into a clean image. That flash-level reconstruction is what our programmers and the PC3000 are made for, and the file system was rebuilt from the result.
We put the directory structure back together, confirmed the work files opened as they should, and copied everything across to fresh media.
It all came back, returned five working days later. The message we press on everyone: a stick that suddenly asks to be formatted should be unplugged, not formatted — the data is usually still sitting there. And treat a USB stick as a handy way to carry things, never as a backup; nothing important should live on it alone.
