This Is an Adapter, Not a Recovery
His enquiry describes no fault at all. Two drives taken out of old laptops years ago: "they were easier to carry around this way as I moved a lot. They did not crash and there is no fault as far as I know — I just need to access what is on them to look for some files." The decode: the cheap answer, and the three things that can complicate it
What he actually needs: an enclosure or adapter that presents a bare drive over USB. They cost very little, they take no skill to use, and any modern computer will read a laptop drive through one and show its folders. For a drive with no fault, that is the entire job. There is no reason to pay anybody, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise.
The first thing that can complicate it — the interface. Drives from laptops of different eras use different connectors. Anything from roughly the last fifteen years uses the standard serial connection, and adapters are everywhere. Older drives use the earlier parallel interface, which no current machine has and which needs a specific adapter — cheap and still available, but not the one on the shelf. The second — encryption. If either drive came from a machine with full-disk encryption enabled, it will read as meaningless data without the password or recovery key. The drive is fine and the folder is private, and taking ownership from the attached machine resolves it in a minute. Being able to browse the structure and open program folders while being refused on documents is the exact signature.
What is worth being careful about: drives stored loose for years should be handled by their edges, kept away from static, and not stacked or knocked. And once the files are found, they should be copied off — a drive that has sat in a drawer for years is not a place to leave anything.
When to ask for help anyway: if a drive does not appear at all, makes noise, or reads only partly. At that point the position changes and the earlier assumption of no fault no longer holds.
