The decode: why the location of the failure matters

What a camera is doing when it reports that error: writing, or preparing to. Cameras write continuously in use — the image itself, then directory entries, then the allocation records marking the space as occupied, and often a thumbnail and metadata alongside. An error appearing during use almost always means one of those operations did not complete. A card that simply became unreadable while sitting in a drawer is a different and rarer situation.

Why an interrupted write does this: the filing structures on a card are updated in stages, and the filesystems cameras use keep no journal to reconcile a half-finished change. So an interruption leaves entries partly written, with the allocation records and the directory disagreeing. The card is no longer coherent, and no host will present it.

Why both devices fail identically, and that is reassuring rather than alarming: the camera and the computer read the same structures and reach the same conclusion.
