A video editor’s LaCie d2 stopped appearing on every machine it was connected to — no clicking, no mechanical noise, just no longer recognised. That silence usually points away from the disk and towards the bridge board inside the enclosure: the small interface that translates the drive’s native connection into USB. When it dies, a completely healthy disk simply vanishes.
Pulling the bare drive out and connecting it straight to our equipment bore out the first suspicion: it span and read without a fault, so the disk was healthy and the bridge was the casualty. There was a twist, though, one that catches plenty of people. Many external units, this LaCie included, scramble their contents in the bridge as data moves across it — a form of built-in encryption — so a naked disk read on its own returns gibberish. The bytes are only meaningful after the bridge has put them back.
The job, then, wasn’t to read the disk but to stand in for the dead bridge. We identified exactly how it had been scrambling the data and reproduced that decode step as we imaged, so what came off was intelligible rather than random. Imaging ran on the PC3000 with the disk hardware write-protected the entire time — the original untouched throughout — and once the decode was applied the file system came up precisely as expected.
We rebuilt the file system from the decoded image, confirmed the editor’s projects, footage and exports all opened correctly, and copied the lot onto a fresh drive.
Every project, clip and export was handed back five working days after drop-off, the original disk never once written to. It’s a useful reminder that with a hardware-encrypted external the enclosure is part of the data itself, not merely a shell around it — and one more argument for keeping an independent backup rather than trusting everything to a single sealed box.
