The stick had snapped off while still sitting in the laptop — far and away the usual way one meets its end. The connector works as a lever, and the small board behind it was never built to take that; one knock, a lid closed onto it, an absent-minded shove with it still fitted, and the load goes straight into the solder joints.
No machine would pick it up at all. Held on it was a student’s coursework and research, with not a single copy elsewhere and a deadline bearing down.
An older, conventional stick keeps two separate components on a little board: a controller and a NAND chip. When it’s the board that’s failed, we either fix it or remove the chip and read it by itself.
A huge proportion of sticks made now — the small, thin, cheap ones most of all — are monoliths instead: controller and flash set together in one solid epoxy block, with no separate chip to take off. Standard chip-off is no use on those; getting the data back means finding test pads on the block itself and reading through them, which is painstaking, specific to the exact model, and now and then flatly impossible.
That’s precisely why we set eyes on a stick before we’ll put a price on it, and why any number given for flash recovery over the phone is pure guesswork.

which is the entire point — connector, controller and board can all be replaced; the flash chip cannot.
The board was too far gone to trust, so we went straight for the memory. The NAND was taken off the ruined board and read directly on a flash programmer to pull a raw dump of the whole chip; from that we unpicked the controller’s error-correction and scrambling to turn the dump into a clean image, then laid the file system back over it. This stick was no monolith, so the chip lifted away cleanly and read without any bother.
With the NAND read and its translation layer reconstructed, the coursework was back.
A torn-off connector above a sound chip is among the more recoverable faults that come our way. What won’t come back is a stick snapped right through the chip itself, or one put through a wash and then plugged in to see if it somehow still goes. The chip is everything. Guard the chip.
Never shift a laptop with a stick still jutting out of it. That’s the whole lesson, and sticking to it costs you nothing.
And once it’s already snapped, resist the temptation to prop it in at an angle for one final read — we see it all the time. Jiggling a broken stick around in the socket shorts its power lines against its data lines, and a cracked board with a working chip turns into a cracked board with a dead one. Bag it up and post it.
