Her enquiry is not about a failure at all. A single-disk network unit that "powers up, but I can't connect to it. It's been ages since I did and I can't remember any of the access details. The decode: what the password actually guards
How these units are built: an appliance running a Linux-based system, with an ordinary hard disk inside holding a standard Linux filesystem. The web interface, the user accounts and the password are part of the management system — they control who can administer the unit, create shares and change settings.
What that means for the data: the files sit on the disk in a filesystem that requires no credentials to read. Take the disk out and connect it to a machine that understands the format, and the contents are simply there. The password is a lock on the front door of the building; the disk is a box that can be carried out of a window.
Why that is not a security flaw: it is how nearly all storage works, and it is the same reason this archive can recover anything at all. Protection against physical access to the disk requires volume encryption, which is a separate feature that has to be switched on deliberately.
Which is the one thing to establish first: whether encryption was enabled when the unit was set up. If it was, the passphrase matters and the position is entirely different — the disk read directly returns meaningless data, exactly as intended. On single-disk home units it is frequently left off, but it should be checked rather than assumed.
What must not be done, and it is the obvious move: a factory reset of the appliance to regain administrative access. That restores the interface and a known password — and on many models it also reinitialises the volume, destroying everything on it.
