The Sound Survived and the Picture Did Not

Her enquiry describes two failures in sequence, and the first one explains the second. A 16GB stick: "it was working when plugged into my first laptop, but there was an issue with videos on the stick having a black screen with just the audio. I tried plugging it into another machine and the stick then wouldn't open at all, and comes up with the error that says the stick needs to be formatted, but this will delete a"ll of it. The decode: what a black picture with working sound tells you

How a video file is built: picture and sound are separate streams, interleaved together in small pieces throughout the file, so that a player can read a chunk of each as it goes. They occupy different parts of the same file, alternating all the way through.

Why that makes the symptom informative: if the file were structurally broken, nothing would play. If the drive were failing to deliver whole regions, both streams would break together. Audio surviving intact while picture is entirely absent means specific parts of the file were unreadable and others were fine — damage scattered through the content rather than damage to the file's structure. In practice, the picture stream is much the larger of the two, so distributed loss takes it out first while the small audio stream survives.

What that told her, before anything else went wrong: the stick was already returning bad data. Files that appeared normal in the listing, opened, and played — while their contents were partly gone. That is a device losing information quietly, and it was the first symptom rather than an oddity with those particular videos.

Why the volume then failed entirely: the same degradation reached the filing structures. Those are small and concentrated, and once they cannot be read the host has no way to present a volume — so it reports the device as unformatted and offers the only remedy it has.

Why the second machine is not to blame: moving it to another computer did not cause the failure. The progression was already under way, and the second host simply met the device at a later stage. Both would show the same thing now.

What must not happen: the format must stay refused. It writes fresh empty structures over exactly the region a reconstruction reads, and it will be offered every time the stick is connected.
