Not Inserted in One Place, Empty in Another

Her enquiry reports two different symptoms from two devices, and the difference between them is the diagnosis. A card used as extra storage in a phone: "my phone currently tells me it is not inserted, and when trying to read it on a PC the folder says empty — however, I have a lot of data on it, mostly photos." Those answers contradict each other, and both are true. A computer mounting the card and showing nothing is a far better finding than a phone not seeing it at all, and together they place the fault at one layer.

The decode: what each device is telling you

What the computer mounting it establishes, and this is the encouraging half: for a folder to open at all — even an empty one — the card must power up, enumerate, report its capacity, present a valid partition, and offer a filesystem the computer recognises well enough to mount. Every one of those layers is working. A card that was electrically dead or whose controller had failed would not get near that point.

So what does an empty folder mean: the volume mounted and the directory could not be read. The entries listing what is on the card are damaged or unreadable, so the file manager displays nothing — while the files themselves sit untouched in the data area. Empty in a file manager is a statement about the index, not about the card.

The check worth doing that settles it in seconds: look at the card's properties on the computer and compare used space against capacity. If several gigabytes show as used while the folder shows nothing, the two halves of the filesystem disagree — allocation records still know the space is occupied, and the directory entries describing it are gone. That is the clearest possible confirmation that the photographs are present.

Why the phone says nothing is inserted, which is a separate matter: handsets are stricter and less tolerant than computers. A phone that cannot read the card's identification cleanly, or that finds a filesystem it will not accept, frequently reports no card at all rather than reporting a problem. Contact wear is also common in cards that live in a phone's spring-loaded slot. Two different hosts giving two different answers is normal, and the more capable host's answer is the more informative one.

Why the outlook is good: directory damage is among the more recoverable conditions. Filesystems keep backup copies of key structures at known positions, so a rebuild frequently returns photographs with their original names and dates rather than as an unnamed set.

What must not happen: no format, and the card should not go back into the phone. Both the computer and the handset will offer to format it — the phone particularly, since a device reporting no usable card is one step from proposing to set one up — and the card should stay out.
