His enquiry is unusual because nothing has been lost yet. A portable drive seven or eight years old: "it was working until the last 6 months, but now when I plug it in it makes some recurrent odd sounds, and while it mounts, I can open the drive to reveal the contents. I have swapped cables" without change. It still works. It has been making noises for half a year. This is the most actionable position in the entire archive, and almost every other case here is what happens when it is allowed to pass.

The decode: what the noise means, and why waiting is the only real risk

What recurrent odd sounds indicate on a drive that still reads: a mechanism doing something it should not need to do. Most often that is repeated head repositioning — the assembly returning to a reference point and starting again, because a read did not succeed the first time. The drive recovers, the data arrives, and nothing appears wrong to the user. The noise is the cost being paid, made audible.

Why six months matters: whatever is happening has been happening for half a year, and mechanical faults do not improve. Surfaces do not repair, bearings do not tighten, heads do not recover their alignment. Every month of use has been more of the same, and the fact that it still works says the degradation has not yet crossed the threshold — not that it will not.

Why this case is the inverse of every other one here: almost every enquiry in this archive arrives after access has been lost. The owner is describing the moment before that — the moment this archive keeps saying is the one that matters, and which is normally invisible. He can see it, and he still has the drive mounting.

So the instruction is simple and it is not diagnosis: copy everything off, today, starting with whatever matters most. Not investigate the sound, not test other cables, not run a health check, not decide whether it is worth a recovery. Copy first and think afterwards. The cable substitution he has already done was reasonable and it is where the investigating should stop.

Why priority order matters: a drive in this state may not survive a complete pass. Copying the irreplaceable material first means that if it stops halfway, what was lost is the replaceable part. Most people copy alphabetically or by folder order, which is a lottery.

What must not be run, and this is where people lose these: disk health utilities and repair tools. A health check reads the whole surface, which is the heaviest load available and precisely what a degrading drive should be spared. A repair utility writes conclusions back. Both are commonly recommended for exactly this symptom and both risk the access that currently exists.

What comes afterwards: once the data is safe, the drive is finished as a working device and should be retired. Seven or eight years is a full life, and one that has spent six months making noises has completed it.
