The decode: what he was looking for, and how it is normally found

What "missing the dock" actually means: on a modern drive the heads park on a plastic ramp at the edge of the platter when it spins down, lifting them clear of the surface entirely. If that does not happen — a sudden power loss, a knock during shutdown, a mechanical fault — the heads come to rest on the platter instead. They can then adhere to it, and the motor cannot break them free on the next start-up. It is a real, common and specific failure, and he was right to think of it.
