The decode: what age adds, and what to report

Why the year matters as much as the symptom: a drive of that vintage has been through a decade of thermal cycling, and if it has been stored rather than used, a decade of not turning. Both do things that have nothing to do with why it stopped working. Lubricant in the spindle bearing migrates and thickens over years, so a bearing that turned freely can become stiff. Heads left resting on a platter can adhere simply from remaining in contact long enough.
