The decode: what a hybrid drive is, and what studio work needs back

What makes this device different: it contains both a small flash area and conventional platters, under the control of one set of firmware. The drive itself decides what lives where — keeping frequently-used data in flash for speed and everything else on the platters — and maintains an internal record of that arrangement. The computer never sees two devices; it sees one, and the drive does the sorting.

Why that creates a distinct failure mode: the record of which blocks are in cache and which are on platters is part of how the drive addresses itself. Where that management fails, the whole device can become unavailable while the platters are in perfect condition — a mechanical drive's worth of data sitting behind a mapping problem.
