Establish Which Problem Is Actually in the Way

Her enquiry contains two separate findings and they need putting in order. An external drive "plugged into my computer when it crashed. Once the computer rebooted I was unable to access anything on my drive. I took it to my company's IT team and they found that the part that attaches the drive to the USB was broken." A crash with the drive mounted, and a physical connector fault. Those are different problems with different remedies, and only one of them is currently standing between her and her files.

The decode: sequence, and which fault came first

Why the order matters: a crash with a drive mounted can leave the filesystem inconsistent — outstanding writes lost, structures half-updated, the volume never marked cleanly closed. That is a logical fault and it is routinely recoverable. A broken connector is a physical fault. You cannot assess the first until you have fixed the second, because nothing can be read at all until the drive can be connected.

So the practical position: the connector is the barrier, and the filesystem question is currently unanswerable. It may turn out that the crash did nothing at all and the drive reads perfectly once connected — which would make this purely a repair. Or the volume may need rebuilding as well. Neither can be known in advance, and that is fine; what matters is not treating the crash as the diagnosis when the connector is what is stopping everything.

The question worth asking, though it may not be answerable: which came first. A connector that was already failing could have caused the drive to disconnect abruptly, which on some systems is enough to bring down a machine — in which case the crash was a symptom rather than a cause. Alternatively the crash was unrelated and the connector broke separately. It does not change the work, but it changes whether the crash needs explaining.

What the IT team got right: they identified the physical fault rather than assuming a data problem, which is a genuinely useful finding and not one everybody makes. A drive that will not connect looks identical to a drive that will not read.

The assumption worth correcting: they appear to have expected the drive could simply be attached another way. On many modern portable drives that is not possible — the USB bridge is built onto the drive's own board, so there is no native connector underneath to use instead, and the broken socket is the only route. Whether that applies here is determined by the model, and it should be established rather than assumed either way.

What must not be attempted meanwhile: holding the cable at an angle to get a connection. That is the instinct with a broken socket and it transfers all remaining load onto whichever contacts still hold, turning a repairable connector into a board with lifted pads.

Why imaging comes before any repair of the volume: once the connection is restored, the drive is captured first and any filesystem reconstruction happens against the image — so a repaired connector is used to read, once, rather than to run repair utilities through.
