Recovering data from a dead hard drive.

A “dead” hard drive is rarely as final as it sounds. Sometimes the drive is fine and it’s the cable or the computer at fault; sometimes it’s a failed board with the data perfectly intact; occasionally it’s genuinely serious. The trick is telling those apart before you make things worse — so here’s how to work out how “dead” your drive really is, what’s safe to try, and how a lab gets data off one that won’t power on.

Before assuming the worst, work out which kind of “dead” you’re dealing with, because they’re not the same. A drive that powers up but won’t mount — you hear it spin, but the files won’t appear — often has a logical fault (a corrupt file system or lost partition) and the mechanics are fine. A drive that won’t spin at all is usually a board or motor problem. A drive that clicks or beeps has a mechanical fault with the heads. And a drive that’s completely undetected and silent could be any of the above. The symptom points to the fault, and the fault decides what’s safe to do next.

If the drive isn’t making any unusual noise, a few safe checks are worth doing. Try a different cable and a different port, and if it’s an external, a different power adapter — dead-looking drives are often dead cables. Plug it into another computer entirely to rule out the machine. For an external, the drive inside may be fine while the enclosure’s board has failed — though if you’re unsure, leave that to a lab. And check Disk Management or Disk Utility: if the drive appears there at all, even as RAW or unallocated, that’s promising and usually a recoverable situation. What you should not do is any of this repeatedly on a drive that’s clicking or silent.

The mistakes that cost the data.

Three things turn a recoverable dead drive into a lost one. First, opening it up — the “pop the lid and have a look” instinct is fatal, because platters are sensitive to dust at a microscopic level and home or office air ruins them. Second, running recovery software on a physically failing drive — software can’t fix hardware, and hours of scanning wear a sick drive further. Third, the folklore fixes: putting the drive in the freezer, or hitting it, both of which do more harm than good. If the drive is genuinely dead in a hardware sense, the only thing that helps is stopping — every extra attempt spends recoverability you can’t get back.
