A Seagate drive in all but name.

Maxtor was one of the big desktop-drive names of the late 1990s and 2000s — the DiamondMax desktop range and the OneTouch external backup drives in particular. Seagate acquired the brand in 2006 and wound it down, so no Maxtor drive has been made for well over a decade. In practice that means the internals are conventional spinning disks, and donor parts overlap heavily with the equivalent-era Seagate models — which helps when a physical repair needs matched heads or a board.

Two decades takes a toll.

The failures we see on Maxtor drives are overwhelmingly age-related. Heads weaken and start mis-reading; the lubricant on the platters and bearings degrades, so a drive that’s sat unused can suffer stiction and refuse to spin up; sectors that were fine years ago now fail to read; and the PCB or its firmware can give out. None of this is unusual for a drive of this vintage, and none of it means the data is gone — but each of these faults gets worse with use, which is why a struggling Maxtor should be stopped, not nursed.

The process is the same as any hard-drive recovery: the drive is imaged read-only, sector by sector, working around the weak areas and returning to them last so the most data comes off before an aged drive tires.
