Buffalo is best known for two things: the LinkStation and TeraStation network drives that sit in homes and small offices, and the DriveStation and MiniStation external drives. Most cases we see are a NAS that’s dropped its RAID array or lost its firmware, or an external that’s stopped mounting. All of it is recoverable — provided a degraded NAS isn’t rebuilt first.
A LinkStation or TeraStation is a Linux RAID box; a DriveStation is a standard drive in a caddy. Each is recoverable — the one thing that turns recoverable into lost is letting a degraded array rebuild.
Buffalo’s storage splits neatly in two. The LinkStation (home and small-office) and TeraStation (business) lines are network-attached storage — multi-disk Linux boxes running RAID over XFS or EXT file systems. The DriveStation and MiniStation lines are ordinary external hard drives. The two are recovered quite differently, so it’s worth knowing which you have.
On a Buffalo NAS, the usual culprits are a failed or degraded RAID array (one disk drops, or several develop bad sectors), a corrupt file system, or firmware trouble — a LinkStation stuck in EM (emergency) mode, or a failed firmware update that leaves the box unbootable while the disks themselves are fine. The data lives on the disks regardless of what the NAS interface is doing. A Buffalo external drive is a normal hard disk in an enclosure, so recovery is conventional. For most, take the drive out and send just the drive. The exception is the encrypted models: where the enclosure’s bridge chip handles the encryption, the whole unit must come in so the data can be decrypted in its original hardware — taking the bare drive out would leave it unreadable. Almost certainly not. A LinkStation stuck in emergency (EM) mode, or dead after a failed firmware update, usually has perfectly intact disks — it’s the NAS that’s unhappy, not the data. We recover by imaging the disks read-only and rebuilding the array offline, independently of the firmware. Send the unit in rather than trying firmware fixes that write to the disks.
No — not before the data is safe. Rebuilding a degraded array onto a new disk stresses the remaining drives and can overwrite what’s needed to reconstruct it, which is the most common way NAS data is lost for good. Power the unit down, don’t re-initialise it, and send it in; we image every disk read-only and rebuild offline.
Send the whole NAS unit, or all its drives labelled with their bay order — the array can only be rebuilt with every member present. Don’t swap disks around or try to guess the order. For a DriveStation external, send just the drive, unless it’s an encrypted model, where the whole unit is needed.
Yes. Bad sectors are imaged around read-only so the most data comes off before the drive tires, and a clicking drive is a physical fault we repair on the bench before imaging. The important thing is to stop using it — continued power-ons make a physical fault worse. Get it diagnosed rather than running repair tools on it.
